The Magic Flute

Very long time ago lived a wise king who ruled his people with the help of the solar disk. He had a beautiful, but evil and power-loving wife and daughter, Pamina. The father gently loved his daughter and waited from her for great affairs.

The king before death gives a solar disk to Zarastro – the head of the union of the wisest – and trusts the education of his daughter. He has assigned Prince Tamino as her husband. Zarastro has sweared to satisfy the will of the king.

The king bequeathed to the spouse all riches of the country and the magic flute which sounds prevent any danger. But the Queen yearned to possess the solar disk. After the death of her husband, she became known as the Queen of the night and kindled everywhere discords and odium.

Pamina grew under the protection of Zarastro, knowing nothing about Tamino. And he roved about country of the Queen of the night in search of his destiny.

Act I

Defenceless Tamino is pursued in mountains by a huge dragon. Having grown weak, the young man loses consciousness. Fearless fighters of Queen of the Night save him.

Queen of the Night transfers Tamino a portrait of her daughter Pamina through the ladies. Fascinated prince is ready to do everything to save her. The Queen of night appears before him and tells false story about abduction of Pamina by Zarastro. The prince goes to rescue the girl. Magic flute will help him in severe trials. Papageno is ordered to follow the prince. There is also a magic tool for– handbells.

Pamina runs away from her guard Monostatos. Papageno finds the sleeping girl. He tells Pamina of Tamino's love and about intention of the prince to save her.

Tamino gets to a sacred grove and learns the truth– Zarastro is not the insidious magician, but wise and fair governor. Tamino plays the magic flute. Papageno's pipe is heard ... Tamino hurries to find Pamina. The ring of handbells captivates Monostatos: caught up by some unknown force, the moor and his servants disappear.

Fugitives hear how the people in a temple welcome the governor. Pamina is afraid of the meeting with Zarastro – whether he will blame her for the escape attempt? Zarastro promises Pamina to help with searches of Tamino. But before they connect Tamino should pass severe tests.

Act 2

Zarastro opens to priests – Tamino is foreordained to become the protector of the temple of wisdom from the Queen of night. Gods will give him a wife Pamina as the award. But Tamino will enter the group of devoted not earlier, than will prove that he is worthy his destiny.

Tamino and Papageno enter upon the path of tests. They must pass it alone and do not miss a word. It does not frighten Tamino, but Papageno doubts. The priests promise to find him the suitable girlfriend.

Appear Ladies and beg Tamino to refuse his intentions. Tamino keeps silence. The fighters disappear.

Pamina is at Monostatos again. The Queen of night gets to the room and protects her from encroachments of the moor. She conjures her daughter to kill Zarastro and deprive him of the solar disc, otherwise she will renounce Pamina, and then the girl should part with Tamino once and for all.

Priests bring Tamino and Papageno in the church. Appeares ugly old woman as from under the ground, calls herself the beloved of Papageno to convince him to break the silence ...

The boys bring magic handbells and magic flute. Tamino plays the flute. Having heard familiar sounds, Pamina runs in. Silence of the prince plunges the princess into despair – he doesn’t love her anymore! Tamino and Papageno start out again.

The priests pray to the gods, who help Tamino. Pamina should also pass the test: Zarastro tells the girl that Tamino leaves her for ever. Prince is hard, and vain are entreaties of inconsolable Pamina. He says goodbye to her and leaves.

Papageno cannot accompany Tamino any more: his morale is shot. He needs a glass of wine and a girlfriend for the happiness. Again there is a familiar old woman and promises to become the faithful wife. He agrees. And the old woman turns into a pretty girl.

Pamina cannot live without love of Tamino. Only in death she sees the deliverance. Boys-geniuses calm the girl, lead to Tamino.

The last test: Tamino should pass through the fire and storming waves. Pamina is not afraid of death and she is ready to enter the terrible gate together with Tamino. The magic flute helps lovers to pass dangers safely.

Together with Monostatos the Queen of night and her confidants get into a wisdom temple to seize the solar disk. Zarastro frustrates their plans.

.Tamino and Pamina have stood all the tests with honour! The darkness disperses, the sun rises. The priests glorify intelligence, kindness and justice.
